Can you use UV gel glue with press-on nails?
UV gel glue is a popular option for achieving longer-lasting manicures, but is it right for custom press-on nails you’ve invested in and plan to reuse?
Short answer: No, Talaskye doesn't recommend it. UV gel glue creates a stronger, light-cured bond that can make removal more complicated and compromise the reusability of your set. Here’s what to consider before reaching for the lamp.
1. UV gel glue requires proper curing
UV gel glue needs a UV or LED lamp to cure fully. When used with heavily designed nail tips, layers of gel polish, stickers, or 3D elements, the design may interfere with light reaching the adhesive. Incomplete curing can leave uncured product behind, increasing the risk of skin irritation and allergic reactions.
2. Removal can compromise reusability
Unlike air-dry liquid glue and adhesive tabs, UV gel glue typically requires a more involved removal process, which may include filing, acetone, or professional removal, depending on the product. These methods can damage the press-on nail itself, making it unsuitable for future wear.
If you’re investing in reusable custom nails, your adhesive choice matters. Stick to air-dry options.
3. A stronger bond doesn’t always mean better wear
Longer wear isn't necessarily better for your natural nails. Moisture, dirt, pressure, and improper removal can contribute to nail damage or other complications. While air-dry liquid glue and adhesive tabs allow for easier removal and maintenance, no application method eliminates these risks entirely. Keeping on top of your natural nail’s health is a top priority.
When might UV glue be applicable?
The only situation where UV gel glue might be considered is at the very end of your press-on set's usable life, when you don't plan to reuse the nails.
Even then, Talaskye recommends consulting a qualified nail professional who understands gel application, curing requirements, and removal. If you want to reuse your nails, Talaskye does not recommend UV gel glue, particularly if you're unfamiliar with the process.
